Beyond the Transaction: Why Partnership Matters More Than Ever
By Stelian Dragan, Chief Business Development Officer | July 8, 2026
In today’s reinsurance market, capacity alone is no longer sufficient. As insurers navigate growing complexity, competition, capital pressures, and evolving strategic priorities, the value of a long-term partnership has become increasingly important.
At ReFocus this past winter, several themes emerged in my conversations with participants across the industry including carriers, reinsurers, and consultants:
- Continued focus on capital efficiency and balance sheet flexibility
- Growing interest in counterparty diversification
- Ongoing evolution of regulatory guardrails for asset intensive reinsurance
- Increasing importance of strategic alignment between insurers and reinsurers to support growth
But beyond market themes and transaction activity, one message stood out: counterparties are looking for partners who bring more than capital. They are looking for perspective, responsiveness, and relationships built on trust over time.
I’ve carried that thinking forward from February into the year. After the frantic pace of ReFocus, I couldn’t wait to get back on the road. Since then, I’ve set out to travel the country and meet in person with the C-suite and broader teams at existing and prospective partners – spending time face-to-face on business priorities, market developments, and mapping out long-term opportunities together.
By navigating long-term obligations and complex decisions together, over time, we build familiarity and trust with our partners. Together, we create a better understanding of how people think, communicate, and respond when challenges arise.
While technology has made communication easier than ever, I continue to believe the real value is in showing up personally, listening, and developing relationships directly. Reinsurance remains a long-term business strategy, and the strongest partnerships are built through consistent conversation and shared perspective over time.
As the market continues to evolve, one question remains worth considering: in an increasingly complex and interconnected industry, will relationships remain critically important? I believe they will – do you?
